An Important Trend You Should Know

The nature and tends of the Internet changes at a regular pace. The current change is the way your website is found through the domain name system (DNS) and by search engines. The most recent trend is the conversion of the Internet from Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) to Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6). This was implimented on the back bone of the network in Feb. 2011. This will affect all websites! IP addresses of all websites will eventually be converted from IP4 to IPv6 addresses. In the transition, both systems will be in place by converting the IPv6 address to IPv4. This can cause many websites and most sub-domains may fail to resolve correctly. Check with your web hosting provider or webmaster for how this will effect your website or if the network you are on is IPv6 ready.

Currently, (2011) this is at the early stages and very few websites have a IPv6, DNS 'AAAA' (spoken as Quad 4) record. Formerly, we only set the DNS server where we the website was hosted in the 'A' DNS record. To convert, an additional record is needed, the 'AAAA' record. Major domain registrars have implimented 'AAAA' records but few companies or hosting providers have their networks ready. Very few websites resolve with IPv6 addresses, nearly all are still on IPv4 addresses.

For example: Quad 4 records exist for Microsoft and do not exist for Google. Go figure.
